Customer reviews of Signify

Customer Rating: Summary: meh, it's alright Comment: I won't deny Porcupine Tree has some talent, and at least the early albums have a dreamy atmosphere to help the music sound a *little* better than the recent hard rock stuff (which I definitely don't see the appeal of) but there's some noticeable problems with Signify that bother me as well.
Let me mention the things I like about the album first. The pretty and dreamy vibe that dominates the entire album. It's an atomsphere that puts you in a state of ease, and makes you feel calm and relaxed. I like this. It's something I felt the new albums were lacking severely. Also, I love the guitar solos that can be heard in some of the songs. In fact, the instrumental passages are rather good most of the time.
The problem I have is that some of the musical ideas repeat a bit too much for me, and the songwriting isn't nearly as great as many fans will have you believe. One song includes a flute that repeats the same notes a few extra times than necessary. Sometimes these guys don't know exactly when to stop hanging on to the same musical ideas and switch to something else, because that's the main thing that keeps me interested in prog rock.
Also, there's a couple moments where you can hear some talking, instead of singing, and that's totally cheesy and unacceptable.
These guys were clearly influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd and early King Crimson, without having the amazing songwriting abilities of either band IMO. I guess if you like "Comfortably Numb", the Pink Floyd classic, you'll love this album. But then again, why bother with bands like this when you can hear more talented and influential bands such as Pink Floyd?
Customer Rating: Summary: A fine album of progressive music by Porcupine Tree Comment: As somebody who grew up listening to the 1970s prog giants, having bands like Porcupine Tree around gives me renewed faith in progressive music. This has just as much to do with their willingness to experiment with current trends in experimental music (e.g. ambient) as with their ability to look to the future.
The lineup on Signify includes Richard Barbieri (analog synthesizers; Prophet V/System 700 electronics); Colin Edwin (fretted and fretless bass guitars; acoustic bass); Chris Maitland (drums and percussion); and Steve Wilson (vocals; electric and acoustic guitars; piano; organ; mellotron; percussion; and samples). This is my favorite lineup and there is great interplay between the bassist and the fantastic drummer - they provide an excellent accompaniment to the synth and guitar parts. Steve Wilson has an excellent voice that is well suited for this material and his guitar playing is great too.
Along with The Sky Moves Sideways (1995), Signify (1996) is another favorite of mine and represents the last of the lengthy "proggy" albums before the band started tightening the format up a bit on the excellent Stupid Dream (1999). In large part, the twelve pieces on Signify (which range in length from 1:41 to 8:57) blend together as a seamless whole, with instrumental passages tying together melancholy, ambient sections and heavier, more "modern-rocking" tracks. This stands in contrast with The Sky Moves Sideways, which featured extremely long pieces. Scattered across the album are various sampled voices and other effects that add a lot to the psychedelic "vibe". I especially like the use of analog keyboards on the album - it gives the music a very dreamy, spacey, and open feel.
Porcupine Tree is a fantastic band that is heading in an exciting direction for progressive rock and is certainly one of the more interesting bands currently active in the scene. Signify is very highly recommended along with Up the Downstair; The Sky Moves Sideways; Stupid Dream; Lightbulb Sun, and Recordings.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ambient Rock that soothes my soul Comment: It started with their album Deadwing for me. After listening to that great disc I was hungry for more and starting gobbling up more albums from these talented British rockers. If you are not familiar with Porcupine Tree, I'm not sure I am qualified to pigeon-hole these guys even though I try in the title of this review. My Ipod / I-Tunes library automatically catogerized them as Alternative - whatever. What I can tell you is these guys are great and this is a good album to start with. It has some good mellow music turns to into rock tunes. Now I guess I can understand some of the comparisons to Pink Floyd because of the surreal portions of the melodies and then changinging into fullout rockers. I find that to be a good thing. The muscianship is stellar and holds up next to anybody you choose to compare! Normally, Porcupine Tree albums require at least 3 listens before the flower blooms, but this one opened up right away for me. I highly recommend this album . Later PT albums lean a tad harder on the rock side than this one I think. Some portions of this disc reminds me of theme music from a cool movie. Other notable discs to consider are In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet. Each one is worthy of your attention. Ciao.
Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome ! Comment: My review is based after only few listening of this cd, in fact, I am new to Porcupine Tree, a friend of mine suggest to get some cd's of the band and I can tell that I am very pleased of what I have heard. The more I listen, the more I like ! If you are a prog music fan and you are looking for something new, you can't go wrong with Porcupine Tree.
Very good cd from the beginning to the end.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not what I expected Comment: Let me start by saying that I am admittedly new to Porcupine Tree. I bought Deadwing and thought it was a great CD. Given that, I decided to give Signify a shot. I can't say I was impressed. I bought it based on hearing The Intermediate Jesus. Being an old-school Brand X fan, I found this track intriguing and figured Signify must contain more of the same. Alas, it just didn't have much else to attract my attention. I'm sure a long-time Porcupine Tree fan would see it differently, but this CD was a bit of a let-down for me.
