Customer reviews of Boheme
|
Customer Rating: Summary: The best of machine music with human vocals from around the globe Comment: HIGHLIGHTS: Deep Forest's Boheme is easily one of the best ethno-techno albums. Not just a pale imitator of Enigma, Frenchmen Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez are avid samplers, apt musicians, and combine mostly European vocals (although some sound Asian and African in origin) on this sophomore outing with their own instrumental arrangements. The riffs are memorable, the tracks are rich and mature -- most are radio-friendly-length -- and just about whenever they're presented with, like master chefs, Mouquet and Sanchez synthesize into a delicious stew.
There are no weak tracks on Boheme, altho some arguably shine more than others: "Marta's song", which I saw a documentary on the making of on MOR Music many years ago, has a hypnotic, entrancing music video which goes around and around (seek it out on YouTube). The violin solo is one of the most gorgeous instrumental interludes I've ever heard, and complements the strong-yet-gentle beat.
Every song on Boheme definitely has its own personality, and if you look closely, the work is divided into two "halves", with "Anasthasia" and "Deep Folk Song" both flawlessly seguing into their next tracks. (This is also how I remember the cassette tape version being organized on each side.)
Most tracks have a danceable hip-hop rhythm and skillfully sequenced bassline, altho if you need a break from that and want to delve into some beautiful piano magic with the talented Marta, "Bulgarian Melody" must be heard -- a shining virtuoso composition!
The album closes off with the title track "Boheme", which pits a warbling, saw wave-derived melody (which is at once obviously electronic yet so organic) vs. more folk singing. Unlikely combination, but it works in an emotional, uplifting way. There's lilts of sadness in it too, which can be stereotypically tough to pull off when using electronic sounds, but Deep Forest succeed again and again!
LOWBLIGHTS: I find it very difficult to scrutinize this album, and I'm very critical of the music I listen to. If I had to list a disappointment, it'd be that the followup album, Comparsa, was elementarily rich but lacked the compositional greateness Boheme has, and set the high bar for: Comparsa doesn't flow as well and the songs by themselves aren't as catchy.
OVERALL INSIGHT: Want to experience the best of machine music with human vocals from around the globe? This is a must-buy!
Customer Rating: Summary: Enchanting music Comment: This is such a beautiful mix of world music that touches the heart again and again. It is like an odyssey to various cultures, but it is flowing and kept harmonious. Very soothing!
Customer Rating: Summary: Boheme is an extraordinary musical masterpiece! Comment: Boheme by Deep Forest is an original work of art which integrates so many different musical ideas it should appeal to most listeners. This is one CD where you may never get the itch to "fast forward" a particular song. It flows so well I am always surprised each time it ends. "Why do all the good ones seem so short?" I'll say to myself. I enjoy listening to other artists like Mythos, Enigma, and more recently Delirium or Magna Canta. All of these artists create wonder by blending modern day sound with traditional concepts and/or styles. However, Boheme began to have a unique and "sacred" appeal to it so I regard this CD as very special. I recommend Boheme to any who wish to be "enchanted" by the forces of ancestral yesteryear blended with the musical delights of today!! I own two copies of Deep Forest's "Boheme" to make certain I will never be without this great music.
Customer Rating: Summary: One of the Best Comment: Just wanted to add my quick two cents regarding this album. This is the best album from Deep Forest and is one I play regularly. The mixture of sound and music in this album is really great. I'm still waiting for Deep Forest to put out another album as good as this one. None of them have come close.
Customer Rating: Summary: Really pretty. And...did I already say really pretty? Comment: Boy, this is a tough one to review. For just about anyone, I mean, because this is so unusual, so far removed from anything else, even other New Age music (oh, just deal already!), there's absolutely nothing to compare it to.
Which means you have to judge it for what it is, which is...well, I don't know. It has the pygmy sounds, and I could tell they were going for the "electronica" elements (nice touch), y'know, so it doesn't get lumped with generic New Age. Other than that, this is just a very nice, offbeat, listenable album. I did say "really pretty" too, right? :-)
