Customer reviews of Altan
|
Customer Rating: Summary: A beautiful classic from Altan's founders Comment: This album, along with "Harvest Storm," "Island Angel," and "Local Ground," is one of my favorites from Altan. I bought it after already owning many of the band's later works, and find myself constantly returning to the simplicity and intimacy of this, Altan's second album. The signature sound of Altan (driving tunes and delicate songs) is here, not so much as a band as a duet between Frankie Kennedy's flute and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh's fiddle, accompanied by light guitar or keyboard. The tunes are a mix of reels, highlands, strathspeys, and jigs. I'm especially fond of Kennedy's flute playing, and "The Cat That Ate the Candle/Over the Water to Bessie" and "The Sunset" are as beautifully rendered as anything found on later albums. Listeners who love Ni Mhaonaigh's singing will find it as fresh and unaffected as always, on songs featuring a simpler arrangement than is heard in later work. If you're a fan of the band Altan, or of traditional Irish music in general, "Altan" is an evocative collection of pieces I'm sure you'll enjoy.
