Customer reviews of Spirit

Customer Rating: Summary: Don't buy this phony. Comment: This CD is illegally using the copyrighted name "SPIRIT" .
Don't give them any money.
Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome DVD and CD Comment: "Spirit" by Peter Buffet is a spiritual expirience that you will never forget. Originally a stage show, it was brought to film and now has captured a NAMMT Award for best "Native Heart " at the Native American Music Awards this past Saturday. The music takes you on a journey visually and musically exploring what happens when technology takes over our lives and parallels the Native American simple way of living simultaneously through various image, music, and dance. All mediums of music are used, Native American, jazz, blues, PowWow, New Age,and ballet dance, erc. Your emotions will be all over the map, you laugh, cry, experience joy. The spiritual journey is worth every bit of the price of the DVD and I bought the CD as well so I could listen to the music only over and over. 5 star album fabulous!
Customer Rating: Summary: AMAZING MUSIC!! Comment: This is by far one of the best musical experiences of Native American music!! This is my 1st CD by Peter Buffett but I guarantee I will be buying more!! I think it SUCKS what white man did to the Native Americans. They lied to them, cheated them and took away what was originally theirs. This land was theirs and it will never be the same again! I think that is one of the saddest things...to see the quiet, peaceful lands become infested with people, noise and pollution :(( SHAME ON AMERICA!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Inspiring Comment: Uplifting, awe-inspiring, thoughtful. About seeking our roots. A wonderful musical journey.
Customer Rating: Summary: Chief Hawk Pope and Peter Buffet are SUPERB! Comment: You cannot listen to this music and not be touched. The old stories and the old songs of our ancestors are alive and well. Chief Hawk Pope, Prinicpal Chief of the Shawnee United Remnant Band of Ohio Shawnee, has dedicated his life to keeping the Native culture, customs, song and dance of his people alive. His voice is beautiful and soothing and reaches back in time to bring the old sounds to our modern world. Peter Buffet is a remarkable composer. His talent is unmeasurable. I highly recommend the Spirit CD and the VHS tape of the Spirit show. And if this isn't enough, the icing on the cake is the LIVE stage performance of Spirit, the Seventh Fire which is touring the nation this year in major cities. This live stage performance is similar to the Spirit video but is much better, including more Native singers/dancers, narration and vocals by Chief Pope, large theatre screens, unbelievable sound, all housed in a huge tent that seats 100's. Spirit is truly one of the great music performances of all time. Buy it, see it and experience it for yourself. Whether you are native or non-native it is an experience you won't forget.

Editorial Reviews:
|
Imagine Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon with a Native American motif and you have a fair gauge of Peter Buffett's intentions on Spirit, a live recording of a 1998 stage production involving more than 80 drummers, dancers, and musicians. (Originally aired on public television, Spirit is now on video.) Most of Buffett's keyboard-driven, percussion-fueled compositions are live renderings of works from his intriguing 1997 release, Spirit Dance, his most recent ode to Native culture. The energized live setting (at times involving a female youth choir, Native American singers, Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, and, impressively, guitarist Peter Maunu) serves Buffett's atmospheric work well as it traces a theme of personal transformation guided by Native spirits. Spirit may not fully match the sustained sensory impact of Pink Floyd's opus, but it offers several riveting moments--the percussion-heavy reworking of "Firedance," his brief contribution to Kevin Costner's film Dances with Wolves, the exultant "Passage," and a lost gem from Buffett's catalog, the plaintive, piano-based "New West." --Terry Wood
