Customer reviews of Sacred Spirit, Vol. 2: More Chants and Dances of the Native Americans
|
Customer Rating: Summary: VERY SOOTHING Comment: This is the type of music that you can listen to relax or as background music. I love the mixture of native American and modern music. It is so soothing that I play it every day for my 2 month old baby.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sorry, way inferior Comment: Strange, I don't know why everyone has rated this so highly - it's so inferior to the original and just doesn't have the same emotive quality or depth.
The first Sacred Spirit album touches me deeply ... in particular the closing tracks which in my opinion represent some of the best music Klaus Zundel (aka The Brave) has ever written. My favorites are the wonderful 'Heya-Hee: Intertribal Song To Stop The Rain' and the CD's closer 'Yo-Hey-Ohee: Brandishing The Tomahawk' - one of the most powerfully haunting and emotive pieces of music I've heard. It's heartbreakingly beautiful.
This follow-up CD (Vol2. More Chants and Dances...) feels derivative and, at times, super cheesy. A lot of it is pure muzak - light 'n' fluffy world fusion with zero 'edge'. OK, some of the first album had some pretty cheesy moments too, and I can see how people who aren't too familiar with electronic dance music might gravitate towards this stuff - but I'm discerning about my dance music so the rhythms and melodies just sound lame to me.
I have a cynical theory. Since the first CD sold millions, I think the talented Austrian composer may have simply bashed this one out... and then ran straight to the bank!
Customer Rating: Summary: This music touches my soul Comment: I bought this CD after visiting Estes Park, Ute territory. I live in another country and this music stirs my soul, something very deep within me that is American comes alive. It's also relaxing music and after looking for music for years I can relax to and think quietly about, I realized one can't have angry or anxious thoughts while listening to this music. It's just very special to me.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Spirits are in Spirits II Comment: I purchased Spirits I several years ago. This past summer I heard Spirits II while I was visiting "The Great Land," Alaska. Spirits II is a very nice compliment to Spirits I. It is a beautiful piece of work and I only hope the producers will continue their work and make this an on-going series. The only downside to Spirits II compared to Spirits I is the producers chose not to provide a synopsis of each song as this did with Spirits I. If you are interested in this type of music, you will not be disappointed with this fine work.
Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing! Comment: If you enjoyed Sacred Spirit I, you will love this one too! I can't stop listening to it.

Editorial Reviews:
|
Given the multi-million-copy selling success of Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans, its follow-up, Sacred Spirit II is bound to have a built-in audience. Like its predecessor, the collection mixes chant and song with dance beats and electronic instrumentation. While tracks such as "Dela Dela" and "Yane-Heja-Hee" meld these elements most effectively, the overall effect of the synthesized sound is heavily over the top and distracting from the gentle melodies and heartfelt cries of Native music at its best. A prime example is the tender and lovely female vocal on "May You Walk in Sunshine," obscured by overly aggressive accompaniment. A more solid and aesthetically pleasing choice for the genre is Prophecy: A Native American Collection, which achieves a finer balance of modern and ancient. --Paige La Grone
