Summary: O'Grappelli or Gavinelli?
Comment: This is a great documentary of the then 83 year old Grappelli in Ireland. You get to see him on one number playing an irish tune along with Gavin, a rare treat. Unfortunately Gavin isn't quite as versatile as he stumbles a bit on the opening jazz tune. Grappelli also plays piano on one piece. Most of the musical clips feature Gavin and his band playing irish tunes and Grappelli and Fossett playing jazz standards. Too bad the tunes aren't listed for you on the video jacket. If you aren't that familiar with these irish tunes (as was the case with me) you end up lost. I'm still trying to figure out the name of the irish tune they did together. The interviews set up the performance clips well as the artists express their mutual admiration. The problem with this video is the video and audio quality. It was taped at a venue in Ireland and the audio wasn't professionally recorded. When the music stops you hear the applause through the musicians' mics rather than through an audience mic. Often when the musicians trade back and forth you don't hear the lead because the mix isn't right. As for the video, it's not so bad except for the poor lighting, which gives it an amateurish home movie feel rather than a professional documentary taping. I treasure every video I can find of Grappelli. He was truly unique and a musical legend. It's a pity the quality is lacking on some of these productions, but if you're into SG you'll want this one despite its flaws.
