Comment: This is one of the best remix CDs I've heard in a long time. A must-have in your collection.

Summary: Suba's echoing soul
Comment: Suba died much to early and in a tragic manner(story has it he tried to save some music in his burning house rather than get out)leaving a void in a tragetory he had created but never fully achieved. His production work was innovative and top notch; his brief contribution to Brazilian-fusion-world-beat has set the standard for all who follow. The Serbian -born musicain /composers work on Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tiempo" and his own masterpiece "Sao Paulo Confessions" are discs that through their superlative qualities will be listened to for generations to come. This tribute CD is right up there with the aforementioned discs. If you haven't heard the others there is no problem with this being your starting point; however , starting with "Sao Paulo Confessions" than "Tanto Tiempo" will give you a better perspective of his artistry. There is not a dud on this disc; only degrees of excellence. There is a continuity and cohesive feel to the disc that is rare amongst a coming together of artists on one disc. Cibelle's "Seria, Amor de A'Aqua" is very catchy remake that sets the bar. Cibelle's other contributions are quite nice and sexy as in "Tantos Deseos." The JP and Suba duets "Futuro Primitivo I, II, III" are magnificent collaborations that if listened to back to back are amazing in their elaborate complex structure; the songs are spread throughout the disc but your I-Tunes can arrange them together. The live element of "Futuro Primitivo" enhances the give and take aspect of the percussion and electronic performance. The tribute version of Suba's "Na Neblina" takes on a completely different sound from the original on "Sao Paulo Confessions" but a worthwhile interpretation, although it is a bit spacey. If you liked the work of Suba than you will probably like this tribute. Try this bit of electronica but don't forget his original works too.

Summary: Worthy tribute
Comment: Suba produced Bebel Gilberto's acclaimed album "Tanto Tempo",and did his own solo work "Sao Paulo Confessions" before his untimely passing in 1999.He was on the verge of the millenium;he had much potential."Tributo" is a worthy tribute to his work on "Sao Paulo Confessions".In some ways,it is superior to "Confessions" but also shows, tragically, how much talent was lost.

There are three brief live concert duets between Suba&Joao Parahyba called "Futuro Primitivo." One can understand the audience's enthusiasm.

Cibelle sings on two great tracks "Sereia"&"Tantos Desejos." It's no wonder Cibelle has succeeded in solo work.Zero dB reconstructs :Samba do Gringo Paulista" into a tribute to Brazil."Lagoa Pinheiros" is delightfully mysterious."Are you sleeping?" is perfect music for a '60s era "space age" lounge.Phil Asher's remix of "Voce Gusta" is jazzy. This album is perfect for those who enjoy Brazilian lounge music;this is perfect for chilling.

Summary: Too Techno!
Comment: I was inspired to purchase this cd after loving Bebel Giberto's "Tanto Tempo", as Suba was credited for one of my favorite songs. However, for those who revel in the true Brazilian sounds of samba and bossa nova, Suba's sound is not what you are accustomed to. After listening to a few tracks I was bored with the repetitive techno sound. While there are a few interesting sounds here, give me real musicians and sensuous rhythmns over electronic sound!

Editorial Reviews:

It's hard to imagine a CD that more succinctly sums up the complex rhythms and cross-cultural references of contemporary Brazilian music than Suba's Sao Paulo Confessions, but Tributo comes close. Confessions, the one solo record Suba released before his untimely passing in 1999, confirmed the musician as one of global groove's leading lights after a production career that included work on Bebel Gilberto's hugely successful Tanto Tempo. Tributo is a testament to Suba's original vision, a remarkably cohesive collection of live tracks, remixes, and newly recorded interpretations of his urbane, percussion-driven signature sound. Every track here smolders and burns with passion and fire, from collaborations with vocalists Cibelle Cavalli and Kaita B to new tracks from Boyz of Brazil and house producer Phil Asher, and remarkable remixes by Zero dB and Bigga Bush. In his lifetime, Suba tapped into and reprojected the teeming, throbbing street sounds of Sao Paulo, one of the world's largest and most densely populated cities. Even in death, his music plays on. --Carl Hanni
