Customer reviews of Vapor Trails

Customer Rating: Summary: Raw and Emotionally Charged Comment: The best way to describe VAPOR TRAILS is that it is noisy. Sometimes it's noisy in a joyous way and sometimes it's noisy in a foreboding way, but it is almost always noisy. Some fans have been turned off by this, but I think that the noise makes sense. That is because VAPOR TRAILS is a cathartic record. And what better way is there for a hard rock band to reach catharsis than to make noise, ........a lot of noise.
Another way to describe VAPOR TRAILS is that it is Rush's most personal and human record. The production has an almost home-made feel. In places it sounds more like a demo than a finished product. But, in my mind, this makes the record warmer and more welcoming, as the wall of studio sheen that is usually erected between the band and the listener has been removed. The rough edges are what make this album feel more human. The lyrics are also the most personal of Neil Peart's career, mostly reflecting on the tragedies that he had had to face and how he had learned to accept them. There are too many high points to list them all separately, but I especially like the images he conjures up on "Ghost Rider," "Vapor Trails," "The Stars Look Down," and "Secret Touch." I'm sure I'm missing some.
There's real blood and guts here: the monstrous opening to "One Little Victory" which conjures up the image of a cavalry charging toward an undetermined fate; Geddy Lee's wails in the middle section of "Sweet Miracle" (the most poignant moment on the record, for me at least); the opening riff on "Earthshine"; and the list goes on. Lee especially deserves kudos, not just for what he does on the bass, but for one of his best vocal performances. Both Peart and Lifeson turn in spectacularly muscular performances. Lifelson's stuff is so good that I hardly notice that there really aren't many solos to speak of.
Finally, another way to describe VAPOR TRAILS is that it is one of Rush's strongest sets of songs. There's not a single song here that I don't like and I like most of them quite a bit. The real standouts are "Secret Touch," "Sweet Miracle," "Earthshine," "How It Is," "Ceiling Unlimited," and "Peaceable Kingdom," but the other seven tracks are all great as well. Over-all, VAPOR TRAILS is Rush's rawest and most emotionally charged record. It is also one of their best. Highly recommended.
Customer Rating: Summary: Progressive Aggressive Comment: When I saw the other reviews featuring 3 stars, I became annoyed.
For me personally, this is an amazing album by one of the last standing giants of rock-progressive music.
Most of the people don't realize that the creation of music as you get older (specially after such a lengthy career, and so many incredible songwriting) the process of achieving something radically new becomes really difficult.
Yet they have amazed me again with Vapor Trails, a nicely produced album that sounds refreshing enough for a band that has been 30+ years in the business. The album musically is very tight, not too complicated, no overproduced but very clean and very well orchestrated.
It has a strong rhytmic presence, incredible powerful yet non invasive basslines, well executed vocals and last but not least, heavier than
usual riffs and guitar arrangements.
The overall mood of the album is strong and cathartic, which I imagine
is a reflection of Mr. Peart's own tragedy at the time
and the influence it had over the band .
Selling over 25 million + albums and still taking the time to write and not live off your back catalog it's outstanding. Long live RUSH.
PS:Remember that in a life spanning career by any rock band there's going to be only one "Led Zeppelin IV", or one "Back in Black" or one "Moving Pictures" it's only fair not to expect every other album to be just that
Customer Rating: Summary: Unjustly Underrated Comment: Although this is clearly not on par with their essential releases from 1976 - 1982, Vapor Trails does not deserve the harsh criticism it receives from many fans. I love the heavy, smoldering guitar driven sound and find it to be a much more satisfying listen then Power Windows. Earthshine, Nocturne, Secret Touch, Ceiling Unlimited and Vapor Trail are all excellent tracks. I would love to hear How It Is as a concert 1st set track and Nocturne as a concert 2nd set track. Give this one another listen, it certainly rewards multiple listens,
Customer Rating: Summary: MUSH - Not RUSH Comment: Do you remember why you first like Rush??? Was it the crisp dymanics, the silence between the notes, the freshness??? That was why I first liked them. Well... That is all gone on this over-produced NOISY, NO-DYNAMICS album. It is a constant hum, and it gives me a headache after the first song, and it just keeps going. Constant NOISE.
Alex, Geddy, Neil... I hope you are reading this. I think you have forgotten from whence you came... Get back to the beginning, or you have been reduced to over-produced GARBAGE.
Customer Rating: Summary: Noise Comment: I'm a huge Rush fan. However, who knows if I like this album. It's mastered so badly that I can't listen to the whole disc. It's dynamically-compressed and clipped; every song sounds like noise to me.
My recommendation is to wait until Rush masters this disc properly before purchasing.
