Summary: Give him Credit
Comment: Sorry to correct the Amazonian gods. While many of the excellent Explorer series are indeed by various artists, this one is "played and sung by Dumisani Abraham Maraire." Says so right on the CD label. Maraire is a masterful storyteller. With the continuity of his voice throughout, apparently in a trio setting, one begins to feel a sense of the rhythms of Shona life.

Summary: One of the first mbira albums released in the USA
Comment: Lovely, early recordings of delicate music played on the "mbira," or Zimbabwean finger piano. With the rise of pop stars such as Stella Chiweshe, this style has since become much grander, more forceful and more tightly arranged, but on this album, originally released in 1971, the style is far looser and enchanting in a different way altogether. This was one of the first albums released in America to feature this style of music, an immensely influential release in terms of the growth of "world music" and interest in African styles. Nice stuff... definitely recommended!
