Summary: Wonderfully mysterious
Comment: The soundtrack to Mysterious Skin by Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd is ethereal and dreamlike. I've been a fan of the Guthrie/Cocteau Twins since the late 80s, and am a bigger fan of the Guthrie/Budd duo. Together they tone down the heavier sounding guitar riffs and altogether omit Elizabeth Fraser's muse-like voice that are endemic to the Cocteau Twins' sound. Each piece is quiet, understated and surprisingly soothing despite its undercurrent of sadness. I think that the film, which I also enjoyed, would have had an entirely different feel if it had been carried by another genre. But this soundtrack stands alone. All Harold Budd and/or Robin Guthrie fans MUST own this disc. It will not disappoint.

Summary: Great album if you are a fan of Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd
Comment:

If you are a fan of Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd then I think you will not be disappointed with this album at all. The two of them have done a very nice job with this soundtrack in my opinion. It is a very mellow album, but if you are an ambient fan, then that is something that you will be expecting probably. I give this album a rating of about 4.8 out of a total of 5 stars.

One album that I think will be the best ambient album to come out in years, for Harold Budd fans, is his next album entitled "songs for lost blossoms" with Clive Wright. That album will be a truly outstanding ambient collection.

Comment: Something is missing from this soundtrack leaving me feel a little empty at the end, but what this ablum does have is just wonderfully composed music which is mesmerizing.

Summary: Shimmering
Comment: With Harold Budd no longer composing, I had to purchase this CD and it did not disappoint. The same shimmering, where-does-it-begin-and-end? kind of music was what I expected from Mr. Budd. If you have his other forays into ambience and simple aural joy, then this is a good CD to add to your collection.

Editorial Reviews:

Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie and legendary composer Harold Budd team to create a soundtrack of lush and atmospheric soundscapes to award-winning writer-director Gregg Araki’s critically-acclaimed new drama MYSTERIOUS SKIN. Guthrie and Budd’s sparse, tonal music reflects the contemplative journey of troubled boyhood friends Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Brian (Brady Corbet), whose lives as young adults weave them down a slippery and dangerous path of self-discovery in MYSTERIOUS SKIN. The film, based on the Scott Heim novel, has been hailed by critics as writer-director Gregg Araki's finest film to date, and has been selected for the Sundance, Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Araki’s career spans nearly 20 years, during which he has written, directed, and produced many controversial and edgy films, exploring and dissecting the strange currencies of sexual relationships. His credits include SPLENDOR, THE DOOM GENERATION and NOWHERE.
