Summary: Skip the first track, and enjoy!
Comment: This cd is by far one of the best I have picked up this year so far. The beats are wonderful, the composition flawless, and all but the first track are memorable. The combination of Karsh Kale's normal influence, with trip-hop like beats creates for an experience that could only rival someone on the level of the Sneaker Pimps and IamX. The music seems fit for every mood and every condition, as well as being a great soundtrack to an epic cruise through the city at night, or some back roads. All in all this cd would be perfect if it weren't for the inclusion of the first track. Beyond the fact that I am not a fan of hip hop, the first track just doesn't fit the flow of the rest of the album. If you are even thinking about this cd, just go ahead and get it, you will love it.

Summary: Kale's Urban Adventure
Comment: "Broken English" is Karsh Kale's rare venture into hip-hop/urban territory with mixed results. Most of the lyrics are in (Broken) English, complete with the masala of Indian music. It's grittier than "Realize" and "Liberation." Karsh Kale attempts political commentary like former Six Degrees Records artist Michael Franti&Spearhead.

The opening song, "Manifest" has tons of rapping from MC Napoleon. It's not as awful as Soulja Boy's "Crank That" or the drivel churned out by Lil' Wayne, Lil' Mama, etc, but it's not Kale's best. "Dancing at Sunset","Beautiful" and "New Born Star" are more contemplative--they're Kale at the height of his powers. "Hole in the Sky" is also meditative. There is rap in "Free Fall" (the vocalist sounds like Gwen Stefani-a Hindi Hollaback Girl!) and "Louder than Bombs."

"Broken English" is Kale's attempt to contemplate and comment on the Iraq War. As politics, it doesn't quite work. Still, the music is different (for him) and it's electrified yoga music. Kale is the hard-edged sibling to the more meditative "Liberation" as well as his amazing collaboration with Anoushka Shankar "Breathing Under Water." "Broken English" has a gritty, urban beat,it urges you to "Rise Up"!

Summary: Cornucopia of sounds!
Comment: This album is great!!! It is definitely different than his previous albums so if you are looking for the same style of KK's music, you are not going to get it. KK is entering new bounds with his unique styles here and makes this album is a musical journey.

Summary: missed the boat
Comment: i sort of liked his other cd's, but this one is just a big mess. with no real direction or theme, most of this sounds like an attempt at (bad) pop music with some exotic sitars and table drums thrown on top. not to mention the onslaught of annoying vocal gymnastics throughout. none of the music here is engaging in the least (which is why there are so many cheap used copies available here). very disappointing

Summary: I'm with the "warning" group...
Comment: I have the first 2 K.K. cd's (I hate remix cd's) and this one is different. It's fine but it has the whole guest artist thing I find tiring. Everyone has to do a guest artist cd and a Christmas cd eventually it seems. The first 2 cd's are more instrumentally his style and this cd is a mainstream pop cd with guest artists that has his style added. You get different singers on different songs. You'll like it if that's your thing but I prefer the instrumental thing more. Just my 2 cents. Can't wait for his Xmas cd!

Editorial Reviews:

On Broken English, Karsh balances his Indian heritage with rock and roll, hip-hop and atmospheric pop for this most diverse release to date. Kale works with a talented cast of collaborators including MC Napolean Solo, vocalists Trixie Reiss (the Crystal Method), Sophie Michalitsianos (Sparklehorse), Diedre (Ekova), Vishal Vaid and award winning Bollywood film composer Salim Merchant
