Customer reviews of The Outsider
|
Customer Rating: Summary: Headphone Commute Review Comment: OK. Fine. I admit. I missed this one. I don't know how it happened. Either it didn't make a big splash, or I got stuck playing Endtroducing... I guess both are true. Meanwhile, Josh Davis, who slammed the above mentioned monumental debut back in 1996, returned a decade later with a third DJ Shadow album. The Outsider may surprise (and/or disappoint) any DJ Shadow fan. The album has only a few instrumental tracks, and it's pretty hip-hop heavy, featuring a long list of West Coast rappers, including Keak Da Sneak, Federation, and Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. Davis is based out of Bay Area, so it would be almost impossible for him to ignore the hyphy movement. Speaking to The Skinny magazine, Davis said, "... it was really exciting when it came along and rather than do what I would probably have done in the past and go 'well gee, I'm a guy who mainly works with samples, so I guess this is just gonna pass me by,' I embraced it." Half way through the album we get a taste of blues, followed by an upbeat instrumental piece, and soon Davis drops a couple of indie tracks, featuring the vocals of Chris James from Stateless. Luckily for me, I dig the West Coast hip-hop sound. And I was equally impressed with the indie rock sound. But The Outsider may turn away the die hard fans. I guess the days of record digging may be over for the DJ Shadow that we know [and love], and as Davis matured, so did his desire for quality studio production. Favorite tracks: This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way), Backstage Girl, and Erase You.
Customer Rating: Summary: New sound, same genius Comment: After all the negative comments this album garnered, I'll admit I was a little hesitant to listen to it. If you're not a hip-hop fan, then it's understandable that this album isn't exactly your cup of tea. But if you're a true Shadow fan, then you should be happy that he is finally receiving the accolades and recognition he deserves. We've known since the beginning that he's a maaaad genius; finally the music industry is taking notice of him. People rag on him because he's gone "maintream." Is it his fault that he's awesome and musicians like David Banner want to work with him? In my opinion The Outsider kicks arse. Seein' Thangs and This Time are only two of the pieces that make the album magical. Chill out and give it a listen. Shadow is a musician of many different sounds and dimensions. Isn't that a good thing...?
Customer Rating: Summary: *Vomits* Comment: Oh wow. I appreciate that DJ Shadow wants to go into new territories, but this is just bad. When I heard Q-Tip rapping, I weeped. How? How did Q-tip reduce himself to this? Well, I thought it was an insult that Q-tip was reduced to rapping over such a weak beat. Why be reduced to this, Tip?
Or perhaps the real question, why be reduced to this, Shadow? I'll state that Shadow said his reply about this album had an idea of "are you a fan of artist, or of the album (Entroducing, since most people will compare this to that)?" Bull____. Yeah, it was a shock listening to this, but, the rapping is horrible, the beats are horrible. I actually thought it would be cool to see Shadow do a playful rap album, as it's an interesting departure to see what this guy could cook up when making rap beats over rap cameos (with masters of the underground, obviously). But instead of that, they go for the inane snap beats, the horrible cameos (save Q-Tip and E-40), and pretty much everything wrong with rap these days. Q-Tip and E-40 were pretty good, but the beats backing were pretty bad. Man Shadow, I wish you would have done downright intoxicating beats instead of the horrible beats he penned. And that's why the rap beats failed.
Everything else on this album, the experiments in other genres, really didn't go to well. The intro for the album wasn't bad, and I liked Tripilcate, but that's it. Those songs really bored me. So really, there isn't nothing to bother with here.
Maybe next time Shadow. It's too bad, because Shadow could have pulled off all kinds of music and old fashioned rap itself. If you were dissapointed in this album and don't have any other artists that you could enjoy, check out Amon Tobin.
0.5/10
Customer Rating: Summary: typical shadow Comment: a well made up albulm by shadow.
a little sublime, mystical, and dark but hey what would you expect?
Customer Rating: Summary: Why all the negative feedback? Comment: I cannot understand all of the negative reviews for "The Outsider". I quite enjoy it and think that it has many merrits. It seems to get better every time I listen & does not suck like many have written here. Judge for yourself, but in my book, this is a great CD! Keep up the great work Shadow!!!

Editorial Reviews:
|
The underground legend returns! Shadow's unparalleled musical contributions have and continue to play a crucial role in the development and mastering of genre blending music. His list of collaborations include works with Dr. Octagon, U.N.K.L.E., Thom Yorke, Cut Chemist and many more... ''The Outsider'' is a record that will confound those who believed they had Shadow pigeonholed. Working with several different vocalists, in styles spanning everything from hyphy, the Bay Area's newest hip hop hybrid, to folk; from aggressive hardcore rock to left-field alternative dance music, the album is an almost schizophrenic collection from an artist to whom loving music and making music are just two sides of the same coin. Long-term fans need have nothing to fear - his power to conjure and affect an emotion by collaging samples, voices and fragments of long-forgotten recorded dialogue remains undimmed.
