Summary: I love it, wife hates it
Comment: I love the CD, but I can't listen to it with my wife. If you enjoy melancholia music and view yourself as a bit progressive, you will love it. My wife thinks its too dreary, but her preferences (AC DC and pop)are a bit narrower than mine.

Summary: Blackfield comes in with it's second album.
Comment: Blackfield II is a fitting follow-up to Blackfield's first album. Both albums share the same melancholic, dark, yet hopeful emotions. Aviv Geffen is the principle songwriter, a very popular Israeli singer/performer/songwriter/activist. His melodies and words strike to the heart, and have made me cry so many more times than I can count. Steven Wilson, known principally for being frontman of Porcupine Tree, a British band widely successful in Europe, but not well known yet in the United States, mixes and produces both albums, and also contributes material of his own, while providing melodic harmonies to all of the songs. Both musicians are amazing in their own right: the 2 of them together: just amazing!!! If you are a big fan of melancholic, lush melodies and lyrics, if you have ever lost someone and need a shoulder to cry on...Blackfield II (and their first album, I have to say!) are for you.

Summary: Once I rise inside...
Comment: The second Blackfield album Blackfield II has been in constant rotation in my Ipod for 3 days now. It's a brilliant album, even better than the unique self-titled debut album of Blackfield.

The album starts off with the powerful 'Once' mostly sung by Steven Wilson and Aviv joining in on choruses. It is a pretty heavy track considering the rest of the album.
The second song is 1.000 People, written by Aviv Geffen with beautiful lyrics (i can take a guess here saying the lyrics represent his insecurity on stage:'A thousand people yell, they're shouting my name, but i wanna die in this moment,i wanna die') mostly sung by SW again, with neat harmonies towards the end (and then the sky is filled with stars,i find a place inside my heart)...this song is lyrically one of my favourites on the album (and then i watch her close her eyes..it's only me that needs to cry.and if i stay with you,do you believe that we will pull through?)
Third song is the upbeat Miss U,this time mostly sung by Aviv about the end of a relationship ('tomorrow you'll be gone and i will miss you...i'm the one who's left behind...it's not that i try to blame...)
Christenings is the 4th track, originally intended for the album Deadwing and hence written and sung mostly by SW.It seems to be about a rejected celebrity (what happened to your guitar?and what happened to the prettiest star?can you still play the songs that got you so far?..i used to see you all the time on MTV..i guess you thought that's the way it would always be)
This Killer is a very mellow song that is another of my favourites with lyrics like 'you think you know me well.It makes me laugh because i don't know myself' the verses are sung by SW and they both sing the choruses.
My Gift Of Silence is sung by SW in a mesmerising tone of voice 'if i complied all my crimes and my lies into amnesty won't you come back to me?' with a comforting chorus 'don't blame yourself, don't change yourself,i just wanna be over you see and feel numb, don't hate yourself'
Followed by Some Day about someone's childhood and how it affects their later life. It's a quite mellow song.
Where Is My Love? follows,Epidemic is by far the heaviest song on the album again written and mostly sung by Aviv with slightly disturbing lyrics 'an epidemic in my heart, takes hold and slowly poisons me her will won't let me breathe...this love is slowly killing me for me there's no one else' about a breakup (You say there must be an end,but afterwards we'll still be friends,it seems so easy) and towards the end there's this screaming part probably done by Aviv,as i'm pretty sure that SW isn't capable of doing those kind of vocals..i may be wrong.
an upbeat song written by Aviv and sung almost 50% by SW and Aviv with lyrics like 'noisy happy people crossing streets from side to side..where is my love?'
End of the World is a profound way to end the album, great lyrics and melody alike...'we are an accident called human beings..we are slaves to our hopes and fears...' with the brillant ending by Aviv 'take this pill it'll make you dizzy and then it'll give you wings'

All in all,Blackfield II is one of the best things SW has ever done.Granted, the complexity of PT is not here, since the songs are barely longer than 3:30 each, but it still has soul and emotion and great melodies.
If you'll listen to Blackfield for the firt time, this is the album to get.If you already have Blackfield this is still the album to get!It won't let you down in any way.

Summary: TALK ABOUT A DISAPPOINTMENT!
Comment: Yet another band whose debut release was a musical "sniper" only to follow up with a "hand-grenade."
Just barely in the ballpark.
Boring. Uninspired.
I was actually embarrassed for SW/Avi upon hearing this rehash.
Pass.

Summary: HERE is my Love!
Comment: I loved this album from beginning to end. I held off on reviewing it for over a year to be sure it wasn't just initial infatuation. It sure wasn't.

For fans of Porcupine Tree, you will hear the indelible contributions of Steve Wilson's otherworldly sonic delivery. This album is filled with of emotion. The music coincides with the lamenting lyrics that give you goose bumps. It reveals tortures of the soul though beautiful metaphor. Steve and Aviv play off each other so well, their harmonies riveting.

But even as you remain transfixed by the music, you will find yourself wanting to further explore the melodic ambiance that flows from song to song. A lovely combination of acoustics, synth, piano, and striking electric guitar and percussion will not disappoint you. It has all the best elements of 80's New Wave and Rock with a distinctly modern vibe. The music is overlaid with heartache, anger and pessimism, yet it is juxtaposed by music that lends to a sense of contemplative hopefulness. Production is impeccable, as fans of Wilson's work have come to expect.

"Once" opens BII and sets the mood for what is to follow. "1000 People" is a favorite song with its amazing harmonies, instrumentation and powerful lyrics. It is supported by lyrics such as "They're shouting my name but I wanna die in this moment I wanna die...." Powerful stuff. Closing things is the anthemic "End of the World" that starts with a slow simmer gradually builds to a haunting climax, "Take this pill it will make you feel dizzy, And then give you wings, Soon boy you'll fall into sleep, Without nightmares, Without any dreams..."

A solid 5 star second release, it surpasses a hard to beat first outing handily. I just wish it were a bit longer than 3/4 of an hour. Fans of that and Stupid Dream era Porcupine Tree, don't miss this one!

Editorial Reviews:

Two years back and forth on the London-Tel-Aviv flight path, a mutual artistic curiosity, and a close friendship are the components that gave birth to Aviv and Steven's Blackfield project. The collaborative songs alongside songs written by each separately brought a unique meeting of cultures, which resulted in a sophisticated, melodic and melancholic rock album. Aviv and Steven spent the rest of 2005 writing new material and working on their own projects, but in early 2006 Steven moved to Israel for 6 months to enable Blackfield to work on a new album. As on the first album both songwriters composed original songs for Blackfield, but also a few of Aviv's songs previously recorded in Hebrew as a solo artist were selected and translated into English. This time the record was made in one short burst of activity (unlike the sporadic sessions for the first album that spanned 2 years). Using the now established 5 piece Blackfield band line up, the resulting album Blackfield II has a stronger sense of direction and power, and is described as "a collection of 10 perfectly crafted songs of beauty and melancholia, combining great hooks, sweeping strings, explosive guitars, and lush vocal harmonies."
