Customer reviews of 35th Anniversary Phaedra Concert

Summary: Pretty Entertaining
Comment: I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this DVD after all T.D. is well past it's "hayday" and although they are pumping out material (remixed-remastered-re-recorded-restored etc etc)like crazy recently, most of it is pretty much a money grab situation. This concert is a little different. From 2005 and with the most recent line-up of Froese + Son (who needs a diet!!) + friends it's an overview of their entire musical history. I agree with other reviews that the Phaedra material looked and sounded like it was just a sample off a computer but they added a lot of stuff over top and throughout to make it more today and alive. My biggest complaint is the annoying lights that blink constantly at the top of the screen from one of the camera's. Could nobody see these annoying lights and fixed the camera or what ever it was!? I watch the DVD with a black towel covering the top of the tv to stop the blinking. Substandard work once again. Sigh... that aside it's still a very entertaining trip through a great bands history. Although the players have changed (all except Edgar who clearly will take this band to his grave) and they haven't broken any new ground in a very long time, they still can whip it out and play. Not classic era by any means but you can never repeat the past and with Edgar's feuds with Peter Baumann (softened a bit with Peter releasing T.D. material on his Private Music Lable) and especially with Chris Franke (who split and left them without a studio) you are never going to get that reunion anyway. Not to mention Peter Baumann hasn't recorded anything musical in almost 25 years.

Summary: At least one person is related??
Comment: Phaedra was made in 1973 by Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann! Did I miss something? I don't seem to see them on the line up! So who is trying to pass this off as Tangerine Dream? At first, I was shocked, I really thought they had reunited. Then I read the details, good thing I didn't buy it! As a huge fan of the "OLD STUFF", I can't spend my money on this! I need to save for the new Beatles concert featuring Heather Mills McCartney! Now that, I'm looking forward to!

Summary: At least it is the full show...
Comment: I don't know where to start. It's a great "historical" concert that spans TD's long history 1973-2005. But it does have some flaws; the package states it has 5.1 sound, but I only found a normal stereo track. The phaedra '05 performance is awfully glitchy and makes me think it was used just to test their wavs. The other performances are OK, with some new percussion arrangements (mainly thanks to Iris, I must admit), but they do sound a lot like their studio counterparts. Did they program all their digital equipment to sound like that? Or did they just pop in some "remastered" wav files into their laptops? I don't know, and I fear the answer to that might be a little too disappointing for a band like Tangerine Dream.

Anyway, this dvd was entertaining to watch, albeit a little long with all that 90's - 00's generic sounding stuff from the second half...

Summary: utter disappointment
Comment: What a bunch of tripe. It is painfully obvious that so much of this "performance" is nothing more than miming. Anyone who is even remotely familiar with the original material can realize that the "historical" material is absolutely note for note. A recording. Milli Vanilli. I'm angry. I have spent so much money on albums and shows in the past, to be promised a "concert" when well over half of it is obviously a recording is an insult. Ashley fricking Simpson! Look at the tune where Edgar is playing guitar alone. Not even close. What a joke!

Summary: For the dedicated fan, a good look at their musical heritage
Comment: It took me a while to get into this DVD, until I realised that the guys were essentially showcasing various tracks from different parts of the TD heritage with a stage presence that matched. For example, whilst playing earlier TD such as Phaedra and Rubycon, the three keyboard players had their backs to the audience with a backdrop resembling the old stage setup from the '70s and the screens appearing as if they were the original sythezisers from that period. The lighting was subdued as well.
Later the more recent tracks of the '90s brought on a much brighter light show, and Iris the percussionist joined them. She is great and was thoroughly enjoying herself, giving new dimensions to the electronic percussion of old.
Eventually Linda Spa and Zlatco Perica joined the others for a very solid session through more recent music. These two musicians have great talent and a real presence and help create some fabulous atmosphere with the traditional TD electronic sounds.
Overall, some of the camera work was a bit disappointing, you weren't always sure what they were trying to show you. The recreation of the 60' and 70s swirly filming did not do much for me. Sound quality was good without being exceptional.
The song selection was good, with a look through many years. Some new interpretations sounded good, excellent musicianship and an appreciative audience. I really enjoyed the show.
