Summary: Simply amazing
Comment:
I stumbled across Nox Arcana when looking at Midnight Syndicate Cds (which is also amazing) and I completely fell in love with Nox... Nox Arcana can put you in moods that can fit the exact premise your looking for when it comes to dark ambiance. Whether its traveling through Transylvania or sailing on a ghost ship or wondering through a forest on winters night, these albums will give you a certain chill and feeling that is hard to describe. If you enjoy dark ambiance you will love Nox Arcana. I have all Nox Arcana cd's and this is the one I listen to most. This album gives you feelings of listening to a macabre fairytale. Pure brilliance.

Summary: Phenomenal!
Comment: Grimm Tales landed me in the haunting wonderland and restored the flashback of fairy tales I once believed in. Nox Arcana has delivered beyond creation of diverse melodies from different studio albums; Grimm Tales album has an eerie feel of haunting melodies of the journey in the enchanted land of dark fairy tales. Highlights are Twilight, Once Upon a Nightmare, Shadow Forest, Wicked Heart, Fairy Tale, Labyrinth of Dreams, Ave Sinistra and Darkly Everafter. The rest of the songs are compelling. Once Upon a Nightmare is absolutely phenomenal! Once more, you will hunger for more from Nox Arcana, therefore, acquire all of their albums especially Winter's Knight which is my personal favorite. Change course from the high pressure world, paranoid society and corrupted politics and set the course to the visionary dream; hear the tranquility of orchestration from Nox Arcana. Turn off the annoying radios, life-sucking tubes/liquid crystals and cell phones and listen to Nox Arcana wherever you go and it will open the portal of your imagination and make you believe and create your dreams. Personally, Ghost of Christmas Past is my all time treasured song.

Summary: Truly unique soundscape
Comment: The album Grimm Tales is another example of how Nox Arcana is able to venture away from traditional Halloween/horror soundscapes (haunted houses/graveyards/castles/bats/cats/vampires, etc.) and create their own unique setting, in this case a fairy tale land. The music is perfect for playing in the background while playing role playing games or during the Halloween season, or just any time. My favorite tracks are The Hollow, Conjuration, Deep In The Woods, Crone's Caverns, and Castle of Nightmares. I recommend this disc highly.

Summary: Grimm Tale
Comment: Fairy tales have been sanitized and scrubbed up through the centuries. Once upon a time, they were dark and even terrifying stories. And obviously the gothic band Nox Arcana knows this fact very very well, or they wouldn't have created the darkly enticing "Grimm Tales" -- their layered, dramatic orchestral music extends in both directions, capturing both the ethereal part of fairy tales, and the horrific and frighteneing parts that lurk in the shadows.

It opens with Nox Arcana's signature intro: a twinkling little solo, followed by a creaky echoey voice which is probably supposed to be a creepy old hag. "Welcome children! Gather round... to ye Grimm Tales of whispered lore. As twilight falls, dark shadows rise... to haunt the night forevermore... for ghastly things that in the dim, beneath the shadows of the Grim! Wait until you drift asleep, to fill your dreams with mortal dread!"

The hag cackles, crows caw, and a dark chorale joins the twinkly music. That segues into the rather typically gothic melody of "Twilight," before getting a more distinctly fairy-tale sound in the urgent, tolling "Once Upon A Nightmare," which sounds like an ordinary dream mutating into a horror. And the ominous "Shadow Forest" sets an increasingly morbid tone as we wander through an orchestral forest that grows more imposing as you go on. You can hear ghosts in he sidelines.

The songs that follow are mostly deep, orchestral numbers full of strings and organs, and with murmuring chorales setting the tone. And in these urgent, orchestral melodies you can hear a world of wolves, fey, spirits, evil kings, a witch casting horrible spells over a cauldron ("Cauldron blazing in the fire/blackened flames grow ever higher"), a chase by malevolent ghosts, a forest refuge with a bad guy lurking outside, a cave where the old witch lurks, a ghastly gothic castle.

Finally there's the "Hall Of The Witch Queen," a vibrant buildup to a the musical battles of the dread-filled "Ave Sinistra" -- which brings to mind the inevitable moment when the villain shows all of his/her power -- and the taut, haunting magical duel of "Black Spires." The epilogue "Darkly Everafter" runs full circle to the introduction -- a twinkly music-box tune that is slowly darkened by somnolent violins and a sense of dread. In other words: you may have won the battle, but the world of fairy tales is still pretty spooky.

Everybody loves being spooked by the darker side of the supernatural, but this is especially when you're a little kid and such things don't seem impossible -- and not always undesirable. "Grimm Tales" successfully brings back some of the feeling of being a small child and exploring in a forest as the sun is setting, or listening to a story that hints at a darker world that is way more interesting than your own.

Nox Arcana spins such a world with lots and lots of orchestral, classic arrangements -- dark and gloomy, urgent and powerful, and some are simply eerie. Lots of richly interwoven strings, bells, a rippling organ and rumbling drums, while the lighter and prettier songs have some delicate piano and a music-box tune. And they decorate the songs lavishly with clips of various sounds -- crows, bubbling, and tolling church bells. The only flaw: a couple of the songs feel slightly disconnected from the "dark fairy tale" theme.

Aside from the evil crone who pops up once or twice, there isn't really any lyrical content present in this album (and most of that is a "wing of bat, dragon's blood" spell). But there are plenty of vocals all throughout the album -- sometimes it's a lone female voice who seems to be drifting just out of reach of the heavier songs, and sometimes it's a chorale of deep male voices who "oooooooooo" like a chorus of gothic monks.

As with Nox Arcana's other works, "Grimm Tales" is a musical journey into another world -- in this case, walking through an oversized, shadowy world of magic, beauty and fear. Definitely for all those who enjoy the darker side of fairy tales.

Summary: Nox Arcana: The Masters of the Macabre Soundtrack
Comment: Wow,
The Legend continues...Nox Arcana can create the dark atmospheric mood like no other, and be true to the subject matter at the same time. The difference is Nox Arcana get's it, and it shows in their work. Others throw down some tracks and slap a name on it, but not these guys. These are the true masters of the Haunting Soundtrack!

Every time a new cd comes out I wonder how can they top the last one, but they do.

Grimm Tales is the soundtrack to fairy tales the way they were meant to be VERY DARK. Each track takes you into the world of Grimm Tales and your imagination runs wild.

I can't wait for their next cd...
